- Formed ANFC with global food companies to advance into EU and UK
▲Samyang Group’s CI Samyang Corporation is accelerating its entry into the global market by pursuing various global licenses.
Samyang Corporation joined hands with global food material companies to target the European food market.
Samyang Corporation (CEO: Song Ja-ryang, vice president) announced on Dec. 6 that it had participated in a global consortium to promote the European licensing of allulose.
The consortium, named Allulose Novel Food Consortium (ANFC), was joined by global food companies such as Cosun Beet, Ingredion, and Matsutani Chemical in addition to Samyang Corporation.
This consortium is to facilitate the entry of allulose into the EU and UK markets, and ANFC is planning to submit a joint application to the European Commission and the UK Food Standards Agency to apply for approval of allulose as a novel food. Novel Food is a system in which the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) conducts a safety evaluation of food with no history of consumption in Europe, then evaluates whether it is consumable and usable in food products.
Currently, allulose has been approved as a food ingredient in countries such as Korea, the United States, Japan, and Mexico; and in some countries and regions relevant licensing is underway. Allulose has been registered with the Flavor Extract Manufacturers Association (FEMA) of the US as a product that adds flavor to beverages and dairy products, and is also listed in the US FDA’s Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS). ANFC plans to promote the exclusion of allulose sugar labeling within Europe after obtaining European approval for allulose. Currently, allulose is excluded from sugar labeling in the Korean and American markets, so the allulose market is continuously growing according to the trend of sugar reduction.
An official from Samyang Corporation said, “Close cooperation with global companies is expected to further save time and cost for registration and approval of allulose novel food,” and added, “The EU approval has a positive effect on obtaining the permission of other international organizations. So, we will further accelerate allulose’s entry into the global market with European licensing as a stepping stone.”
Allulose is a sweetener found in figs and grapes, and it is called a next-generation alternative sweetener because it has a sweetness similar to sugar but has ‘zero’ calories. Samyang Corporation succeeded in commercializing allulose with its own technology in 2016 and is currently focusing on expanding the foundation for global advancement through global public relations activities and discovery of business and distribution partnerships.
